What we'll ask when you call
- Model year.
- GVWR, the gross vehicle weight rating. The driver's door-jamb label usually shows it.
- Whether you received a DMV renewal notice or other documents DMV sent you asking for a smog check.
How diesel rules work in California
- Part of the program: 1998 and newer diesels with a GVWR of 14,000 lb or less.
- Exempt: 1997 and older diesels, and diesels over 14,000 lb GVWR.
- No newer-model-year exemption. Gas and hybrid cars get their first eight model years off. Diesels don't.

If a diesel fails
You'll get the vehicle inspection report with the results and any open safety recalls. With the check engine light on, a vehicle will not pass. We're test-only, so we don't do repairs. Emissions repairs are done at a test-and-repair or repair-only station of your choice. Find a licensed repair station with BAR's Auto Shop Locator. Within 30 calendar days of the paid, failed inspection, the $30 smog retest is $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass.
