What to bring

Bring your vehicle and your DMV renewal notice. The notice spells out whether your car needs a smog certification this year and whether a STAR station has to do it. Handling a private sale or a car that moved here from out of state? Bring your DMV renewal notice or the documents DMV sent you. If you can't find the notice, give us a call first.

How it works

  1. Arrive or book

Walk-ins are welcome; booking online holds a time slot for you.

  2. We inspect

We enter the vehicle into the state system and run the inspection the program requires for its model year — on most cars that means reading the onboard computer and checking the emissions equipment.

  3. We review the results with you

You leave with the vehicle inspection report, which shows the results and whether the car passed.

The current price lives on our coupon page.

If your car fails

Nobody can promise a pass before the test is run. If the vehicle doesn't pass:

  • We go through the report line by line, so you know exactly what the inspection found.
  • You choose where the repair is done. Emissions repairs are done at a test-and-repair or repair-only station of your choice. Find a licensed repair station with BAR's Auto Shop Locator.
  • You come back for the retest. Within 30 calendar days of the paid, failed inspection, the $30 smog retest is $21.75, plus the $8.25 state certificate if the car passes.

Before that retest, drive the car normally for a few days if the repair involved disconnecting the battery or clearing codes. The onboard self-tests have to finish running before the inspection can be completed.

Frequently asked questions

What does "STAR station" mean?

STAR is a program run by California's Bureau of Automotive Repair. A station has to meet the BAR's performance standards to join and stay in it. When a DMV renewal notice says "STAR station," the certification has to come from a station like ours. We also inspect cars whose notices don't say that.

What do I need to bring?

The vehicle plus your DMV renewal notice. Add the documents DMV sent you if the car is changing owners or arriving from another state.

How often do I need a smog check in California?

Think of it as every other registration renewal for most cars. Newer gasoline vehicles get a break: during roughly their first eight model years they generally skip the biennial check, and the owner pays a smog abatement fee with registration. Selling a car or bringing one into the California system for the first time usually triggers a smog certification as well. Your DMV notice has the specifics for your car.

What happens if I don't pass?

We explain the report. Emissions repairs are done at a test-and-repair or repair-only station of your choice, which you can find with BAR's Auto Shop Locator. Return within 30 calendar days and the $30 smog retest is $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass.

Can you test my hybrid or diesel?

Hybrids, yes; they're on the same schedule as gas cars. Smog rules for diesels depend on the model year and weight rating. Call us before you come in and we'll confirm whether yours needs a check and whether we can test it here.

I just moved to LA from another state. Do I need a smog check?

Usually, yes. A car registered in California for the first time needs a smog check, though all-electric cars and motorcycles are exempt. For a newer model, call us to confirm what your vehicle needs.
