The papers that matter
- Your vehicle inspection report. It lists what was tested, the pass or fail outcome, and open safety recalls. The repair shop will want to see it.
- Your DMV renewal notice or the documents DMV sent you. The notice says whether the retest has to be at a STAR station.
Your next steps
1. Understand the report. Before you drive off, we go through what didn't pass so you can explain it to a mechanic.
2. Pick a repair station. Emissions repairs are done at a test-and-repair or repair-only station of your choice. Find a licensed repair station with BAR's Auto Shop Locator.
3. Give the car a week or two. If the repair involved disconnecting the battery or clearing codes, normal driving lets the readiness monitors reset.
4. Retest with us. The $30 smog retest is $21.75, plus the $8.25 state certificate if the car passes, within 30 calendar days of the paid, failed inspection here. If your notice requires a STAR station, we qualify.
What usually trips a test
- Check engine light on. A vehicle with that light lit will not pass.
- Readiness monitors not complete, often after a battery swap or cleared codes.
- An emissions component fault that the report identifies.
Before paying for a big repair, look at your owner's manual. Some emissions repairs may be covered by your manufacturer's warranty.

What's the retest price?
For a car that failed its paid inspection here: $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate if it passes ($30 total), within 30 calendar days. If it fails again, that retest is $21.75.
Can I find out in advance whether my car will pass?
No station can tell you that before testing. A lit check engine light means it won't pass.
Does the report say anything about recalls?
Yes. It lists any open safety recalls on the vehicle.
Where can I get the retest?
Your notice decides: a STAR station if it says so, and otherwise any test-and-repair or test-only station. We are STAR certified.
